Chapter Twenty-Four

My mind slowly drifted back to me, and I felt a hangover come on like I’d never had when alive. And trust me, collectively, I’d had years of them. But none felt like my brains had been stomped upon by a jealous elephant, forced through a rusty kitchen meat grinder, then eaten by a yippy lap dog and shat out the other end.

“How are you feeling?” the reporter asked, her mascara-stained face hovering over me.

“I’m fine.”

“You don’t look fine,” she said, scowling. “You look worse than dead.”

“What—” I said and tried to sit up. Then, realizing that was a horrible idea, I inched back down. “What does worse than dead look like?”

She lifted my arm up and dropped it. Brenda was sitting next to me on the cement floor of what looked like a parking garage. Again, she raised my arm and released it. I looked down without moving my head and saw she was letting it fall onto her leg.

Fast learner.

I felt rivulets of energy seep back into my body, took a deep shuddering breath, then felt as though I’d actually exhaled for the first time in my life.

The emotions of the experience in the power station were still fresh, raw, in my mind. I could feel a swell in my throat. I felt like weeping and was glad there just wasn’t the strength for that.

I said all I could at that moment. “Thank you.”

“Not a problem,” she said and stood, yanking me up to my feet. “You feeling a bit more… uh, normal?”

Nodding, I looked around at the parking garage and saw that we must have been a few levels underground. Seemed like a good place to lie low for a few minutes.

I said to her, “So you’re still here.”

“I noticed that.”

“I thought maybe Julius might have inadvertently uploaded your details by now. You and the mailman.”

She spread her arms out wide and actually gave me a small smile. “Still here.”

“So, Bernard?” I said, choking on a sob. “I saw him trapped in that thing you pulled me out of.”

“He’s here?” she said, a little distressed.

“And how’d you do that, by the way?” I said. “How’d you know how to find me?”

Brenda turned in small circles, generating a bit of energy, recouping a small part of what she’d given to me.

She said, “It was a mistake, actually. I’d been tracking the Ringman, Jan Jorgensen, you know, like the way you said. The pull, right? And Lonnie and I must have crisscrossed paths, because next thing I know, I’m looking at him.”

“Yeah.” I nodded slowly, having had the same experience myself. “That used to drive me a bit nuts early on. But after a while, you do start picking up differences. Almost like a cologne or perfume. Everybody has a different, I dunno, scent. Takes a while to get down.”

“Right. Well, I was going to break off but saw Lonnie talking with some spooks, and they didn’t look like pals. Real aggressive, threatening. Then I heard your name. A few hours later, I’m dragging you out of that crazy monstrosity.
